Quick Answer: Every Free Iconic Weapon

You never have to spend eddies on the best weapons in Cyberpunk 2077. 38 iconic weapons and crafting specs below are completely free: quest rewards, boss drops, world placements and NCPD hustle specs — 24 in the base game, 11 in Phantom Liberty, plus 3 free crafting specs. Several are permanently missable, so this page doubles as a checklist in story order. Full stat breakdowns and build pairings live in the weapons guide; the free versions of everything on that page are collected here.

  • Act 1 alone hides 8 free iconics — including Satori and Skippy, two of the strongest pickups in the game.
  • 11 Phantom Liberty iconics are free in Dogtown, from Her Majesty (unmissable story gift) to choice-locked picks like Fang.
  • 3 top-tier weapons (Comrade's Hammer, Buzzsaw, The Headsman) cost zero eddies if you loot their specs from NCPD Suspected Organized Crime Activities.
  • Cocktail Stick and Tinker Bell are permanently missable; Stinger vanishes if you wait too long — the checklist section covers every warning.
Tip
Free means no purchase required. A few of these (Errata, Tinker Bell) are also sold by vendors later if you miss them — that rescue costs eddies, so grab the free version first.

Act 1 Free Iconics: The Early Game Grab List

Act 1 and its opening side jobs contain one of the densest concentrations of free iconics in the game. Every weapon below is available before the story locks you out of Watson at the end of The Heist chapter — Skippy, Fenrir, Cottonmouth and Cocktail Stick arrive via side jobs that unlock during Act 1 or early Act 2.

Tip
The Heist is story-only — explore the AV pad and Yorinobu's bedroom thoroughly before leaving Konpeki Plaza. Cocktail Stick in the Clouds VIP area is a confirmed missable; the other Act 1 side jobs can be replayed only via an earlier save.

Quest & Gig Free Iconics: Base Game Mid-to-Late

The bulk of free iconics come from side jobs, gigs and character questlines between Acts 2 and 3. Most are guaranteed rewards; a handful depend on dialogue choices, noted per weapon. Which of these is "best" depends on your build — Widow Maker loves poison builds, Scalpel was made for Sandevistan runs.

Tip
Stinger is the sneakiest entry on this list: accept I'll Fly Away promptly and take Mitch's knife before Queen of the Highway finishes preparing the Basilisk. See characters for the full Panam questline order.

Endgame & Ending-Locked Free Iconics

Three free iconics sit at or past the point of no return. Ba Xing Chong is always available during the finale raid, while Amnesty only exists on The Star path — one more reason the ending choice matters before you commit.

Tip
Amnesty requires the Aldecaldos ending route: complete Panam's full questline, call her at Nocturne Op55N1, then take Cassidy's shooting challenge during We Gotta Live Together — details in the endings guide.

Missable Free Iconics Checklist

This is the checklist to keep open during a playthrough. Two pickups are confirmed permanently missable inside their quests, one vanishes on a timer, and several more are locked behind dialogue choices — miss the choice and the weapon never spawns (or only appears in a paid vendor's stock). Full per-weapon details in the weapons guide.

Tip
Save before The Pickup, Automatic Love, The Hunt and every named PL choice job — that single habit covers every missable free iconic in one playthrough.

Phantom Liberty Free Iconics: All Dogtown Locations

Phantom Liberty adds 11 free iconics concentrated in Dogtown — main story gifts, gig rewards, side-job choices and one open-world area boss. Her Majesty is genuinely unmissable; everything else rewards exploring gigs and Increased Criminal Activity markers.

Firestarter is the big fork: side with Reed for Fang now, or side with Songbird — the endings guide covers which PL endings each side opens before you decide.

Free Crafting Specs: The NCPD Route (Craftable vs Found)

Not every free iconic is picked up — three of the strongest weapons in the game are craftable, and their specs cost nothing if you clear the right NCPD Suspected Organized Crime Activities (the skull-icon hustles). This is the "craftable vs found" split in a nutshell: found iconics drop at a tier tied to your level, while a crafted iconic arrives at the tier you craft it — the spec is the free part, the components are the cost.

  • Iconic specs also drop from weapon vendors' stock and other bosses — but these three are free pickups tied to NCPD hustles.
  • Picking up an iconic weapon also unlocks its spec for the next tier — every found weapon on this page feeds the crafting system.
  • A weapon must be in your inventory (not the stash) to appear in the Crafting > Upgrades menu.
Free Crafting Specs: The NCPD Route (Craftable vs Found)
WeaponTypeSpec LocationWhy It's Worth It
Comrade's HammerTech RevolverNCPD Suspected Organized Crime Activity bossCharged shot deletes elites through cover
BuzzsawPower SMGYelena Sidorova — Northside Suspected Organized Crime ActivityShoots through thin cover, +25% armor penetration
The HeadsmanPower ShotgunNorth Oak Suspected Organized Crime Activity bossOne accurate slug instead of pellets, +215% headshot damage
Tip
NCPD scanner hustles are marked with skull icons on the map — clear the three listed here and you have endgame-tier weapons for the cost of components.

Is It Worth Upgrading Free Iconics?

Yes — selectively. Since Update 2.0, only iconic weapons can be upgraded, and each upgrade raises the weapon one tier and rescales its damage. A free iconic grabbed at level 10 (that Satori from The Heist) starts weak but upgrades all the way to Tier 5++, which makes early free pickups long-term investments rather than placeholders.

  • Upgrades cost components of the tier you are moving into — dismantle same-tier weapons and junk to feed the loop.
  • The final steps are expensive: Tier 5 to 5+ costs 75 Tier 5 components, and 5+ to 5++ costs another 200.
  • Cheapest Tier 5 components: buy cheap high-tier clothing from vendors and dismantle it — better eddies-per-component than buying components outright.
  • Do not upgrade everything you pick up. Pick two or three favorites for your build and hoard components for the final 5+ and 5++ pushes.
Tip
The practical rule: upgrade the free iconics whose unique effect matches your build (Scalpel for Sandevistan, Errata for burn, Her Majesty for stealth) and leave the rest as collection pieces.

Free Iconic Collecting Tips

A short playbook for finishing the set in one playthrough, built from the missable list above.

  • Explore off the critical path during jobs — bedrooms, side rooms and containers hide most world-placement iconics (Fingers' bed, the Clouds VIP area, Yorinobu's bedroom).
  • Manual save before every choice job: The Pickup, Automatic Love, The Hunt, and the PL forks in No Easy Way Out, Go Your Own Way, Addicted to Chaos and Firestarter.
  • Do Panam's questline early if you want the timed pickups — Overwatch comes free from Riders on the Storm and Stinger expires inside it.
  • Check every NCPD skull-icon hustle on the map for specs — the three free spec weapons are endgame-caliber.
  • Display collected iconics on the weapon racks in V's apartments to track your checklist progress in game.
  • Iconics drop at a tier tied to your level — a low-level grab is not a wasted grab, it is an upgrade candidate.
  • Pair pickups to your build as you go: weapons has the full synergy table, builds the archetype breakdowns.
Tip
Playing the full checklist route also lines up with the best ending prerequisites — Panam's chain covers Overwatch, Stinger and Amnesty access, per the endings guide.
